How to get to the hamptons
There is regular train service to theHamptonsand many of the trains stop inJamaicafor a switch of trains so you could, assuming the schedule works for you, take the train from JFK to Jamaica and switch to the Hamptons train; Also, there is a regular Jitney service from Manhattan to all of the Hamptons and also the North Fork ofLong Islandnow and they do an airport stop...you could go on the hamptonjitney website and check their schedules; Don't know whether you are planning on staying out in the Hamptons for a while...if you are, you might want to think about renting a car and driving yourself out there...it will take you between one and a half and two and a half hours to drive from JFK depending on the time of the day, a weekend or weekday and whether it is summer or not....obviously the worst is a summer weekend morning with everyone going out to the beach from the city. From Southampton to New York City midtown normally takes about two hours to two and a half hour on the jitney; a little less if you are driving; the train is about the same but runs less frequently...will bring you into Penn Station in the West 30's...Good luck!(And talk about midtownNew York, not New York Central which was the old name of our railroad and also will be confused with Grand Central, another station)
JFK to Hamptons
As Carol says, you have 2 options. The first is the train. You'd take the AirTrain at JFK toJamaicastation and there get a Long Island Railroad train (the Montauk line) to theHamptons. If you're staying in Sagaponack, you will want to go to Bridgehampton, not Southampton as it's closer.
But the train doesn't run very frequently, so you probably will need to take the Hampton Jitney (coach). You will need to get a taxi at the airport to the pick up spot for the bus near JFK. On the Hamjitney it says:
"Airport connection passengers should take a cab from JFK or LaGuardia to our stop inFresh Meadows,Queens, at the corner of 190th Street and the Eastbound Service Road of the L.I.E. (TakeL.I.E.toExit 25 eastbound, follow the service road to the front of the Fresh Meadows Cineplex Odeon Movie Theatre)."
You should print that info out and have it with you. Don't expect any cab driver to know where the Jitney stop is. You might even want to map it out on mapquest.com and have that with you as well.
It will take about 15-20 mins. to get there from getting into the taxi. You'd then get on the bus and the trip is about 2 hrs. from there. This will be a very long if you're coming straight from NZ. Buses leave about once an hour and the last bus of the day is at 11:50 pm.
Does anyone have any personal experience with the various transportation options from JFK to Bridgehampton?
the best from jfk airport to Bridgehampton is Limousine and Car service. If you are traveling with lagguages and more one passenger. Your best bet will me a car service. Asm Limousine service in The hampton provide affordable fares to hamptons. rate is start from 180 dollars to 240 dollars for a lincoln town car and this is from door to door service. I cant tell you how many times Ive heard folks say they want to go to the Hamptons but have heard horror stories about the traffic. If you choose to drive you can avoid getting stuck in traffic by avoiding the Long Island Expressway or 27E (Montauk Highway) on a Friday from 3pm 7pm. We like to go out on a Thursday evening or late on Friday if possible. Years ago, there was an infamous bottleneck where 27E narrowed to one lane as you entered Southampton. Two years ago, the town altered the road so it is two lanes which has made a huge difference in the traffic congestion. (In a future post I will give you my back road route to save you more time on the roads.)
Flying to the Hamptons
The major airports that service the area close to Long Island, NY are JFK international and LaGuardia Airport (both in Queens County),Islip/MacArthur Airport(Ronkonkoma, NY in Nassau County) and East Hampton Airport. JFK and LaGuardia are approximately 85 miles from the Hamptons.Islip/MacArthur Airportis 50 miles from the Hamptons. To get to the Hamptons from MacArthur Airport you can use theHampton Jitney ($12-25)orwww.asmlimousine.com(Fares run $90-$120). The East Hampton Airport only services private planes and small charters.
There is nothing scarier to me than a helicopter or prop plane but if youre a high roller and want to be in the Hamptons in 45 minutes from NYC chartering a plane or helicoptermight be for you.
Taxi/Car Service
You can expect to payabout $240 to get alimo from JFK or Laguardia to the Hamptons.Asm Limousine and Car Service (631) 703 1662 is a good bet as they are familiar with the area.if you are using the service a group of friends to the Hamptons and it ended up being very economical the company is licensed and insured. www.limousineserviceservicelongisland.com
Ferry Service
A friend of ours who lives in Hartford, bypasses I-95 by taking theNew London, Connecticut ferry to Orient Point(1 hour 45 minutes). From Orient Point he drives to Greenport (about 6 miles) takes theNorth Ferryto Shelter Island (15 minutes). From Shelter Island he takes theSouth Ferryto Sag Harbor (5 minutes). His actual drive time is about one hour and 15 minutes. Cross Sound Ferrytakes cars, passengers and trucks from Bridgeport, Connecticut to Port Jefferson, Long Island. It will take you about one hour and 15 minutes to drive from Port Jefferson to the Hamptons. My kids love the ferry. They think we are on a mini-cruise whenever we take it.
So dont let the traffic terrorists scare you away from a beach vacation in the Hamptons. See you on the beach! bridgeahmpton limo in local service in brodgehampton bridgehampton limousine
